Alcestis is a tragedy by Euripides. The Moirae promise that if anyone would want to die instead of Admetus, they would allow it. Since no one volunteers, not even his elderly parents, his wife Alcestis steppes forth. Heracles decides to confront Hades when the funerary sacrifices are made at Alcestis' tomb, to bring her back from the dead.
